Morristown International Airport

In the early 1930s, the airport was situated on 280 acres occupied by The Normandy Water Works, on the Columbia Meadowlands. In1933, the federal government provided funds for airport improvements under the Works Project Administration. During World War II, Morristown Airport conducted an army primary flight training center. Near the conclusion of World War II, the Army returned the airport (now worth $1.5 million) to the town. In 1947, Morristown put $60,000 into the purchase and installation of hangars. Then, Morristown Municipal Airport (MMU) began welcoming aviation companies to Morris County. In the summer of1969, Hanover Township, Morristown, Florham Park, and six members of the Citizens for a Smaller Morristown Airport, filed a lawsuit jointly to block the expansion of the runway and facilities to accommodate medium- and short-range jets. A judge ruled in favor of the airport. Work was done in the 1970s to extend the major runway. By 2002, there were several hundred aircraft based at MMU, including jets, helicopters, and turboprops. It is the third-busiest airport in New Jersey; only behind Newark-Liberty International Airport, and Teterboro, and now sits on 638 acres of land.

 

Morristown International Airport is just three miles east of downtown Morristown and 27 miles west of Manhattan, providing convenient access to the New Jersey-New York Metropolitan area. Directly off of Route 24 in Morristown, you can get to the Holland Tunnel, in less than 30 minutes.

● It has two asphalt runways: 5/23 is 5,998' x 150' (1,828 x 46 m) and 13/31 is 3,997' x 150' (1,218 x 46 m). 

● There are two fixed-base operators (FBOs), Lynx and Signature Flight Support, and four flight schools on site (American Flyers, ATP, Certified Flyers, and NOVA Aviation).

● It supplies an estimated $13 million in tax benefits to the community.
