Dubai International Airport

Dubai International Airport is the main international airport that serves Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is an important contributor to the Dubai economy, employing around 90,000 people, indirectly supporting more than 400,000 jobs and contributing over $26.7 billion to the economy.

Airport history

In 1959, work began on the construction of "Dubai airport" in a large expanse of wasteland. Four years later, work started on the asphalt runway, which then opened in 1965, along with many other facilities. By 1969, Dubai International Airport housed nine airlines, flying to 20 different destinations. During the 1970s, the airport went through many upgrades, including a three-story terminal building, a new control tower, additional taxiways, the lengthening of the runway, and the extension of aprons. Then on December 23, 1980, the facility became an ordinary member of the Airports Council International. Four years later, in 1984, the second runway opened up. By 1988, passenger throughput had increased to 4.3 million flyers and a decade later it had more than doubled to 9.7 million. Terminal 2 opened in 1998, which increased the airport's capacity by two million passengers per year. In 2000, Concourse 1 opened for business, and was part of the first phase of the general expansion project. This addition increased the airport's capacity from 10 million to 23 million. The long-awaited Dubai International Terminal 3 opened in 2008, increasing the facility's capacity yet again, this time to 60 million passengers. The following year, work started on Concourse 3 (now called Concourse A). Dubai Airports opened the intial phase of Dubai World Central for cargo operations on June 27, 2010. In 2013, Concourse A opened, which was the world's largest facility purpose built for the A380. The $1.2-billion state-of-the-art Concourse D opened in 2016, operating out of Terminal 1. In 2018, the airport welcomed its one billionth international passenger and the airport continues to thrive today.
